Role of the particulate filter

A diesel particulate filter or DPF is an ” anti-pollution ” engine component located at the outlet of the vehicle’s exhaust manifold. It is fitted to both diesel and petrol vehicles. It is installed after the catalytic converter and before the silencer. It is equipped with a honeycomb filtration system that retains the fine particles resulting from the combustion of the air/fuel mixture. As these particles can be carcinogenic for humans and highly polluting for the environment, the DPF has a very important role to play in the fight against pollution.

How the particulate filter works ?

A particle filter operates in 2 stages. The first stage filters out particles, while the second removes them.

The primary function of the DPF is to filter and capture the fine particles present in the exhaust gases. This forms a layer of soot on the filter walls. Periodic regeneration is therefore necessary to regularly remove the soot.

DPF regenerations take place in automatic cycles during which the temperature of the exhaust gases is greatly increased in order to burn off the soot deposits.

Eventually, if the DPF has a malfunction or if the regenerations are not regular, this layer of soot clogs the particle filter, causes a reduction in engine performance and leads to clogging of the DPF.In this case, the DPF must be cleaned or replaced.

Replacing the particulate filter is a very costly operation. The part itself is expensive, and it also requires labor to disassemble and reassemble it.

DPF cleaning therefore remains a very interesting alternative to avoid its replacement.
