The importance of the Nox sensor…

NOx sensor

The NOx sensor is a component of the emission control system in modern vehicles. It is designed to measure the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOx) present in the exhaust gases and provide information to the engine control unit (ECU) to adjust the air/fuel mixture.

The main role of the NOx sensor is to monitor the concentration of NOx in the exhaust gases. The sensor uses an electrochemical technique to detect the concentration of NOx, measuring the potential difference between a reference electrode and a gas sensitive electrode. This potential difference is converted into a signal voltage which is sent to the ECU.

How it works ?

Using information from the NOx sensor, the ECU can adjust the air/fuel mixture to reduce the amount of NOx produced by the engine. The ECU can also adjust the amount of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and combustion temperature to further reduce NOx emissions.

When the NOx sensor starts to malfunction, it can cause a variety of problems, including high emissions, excessive fuel consumption, loss of power, and starting problems. Common symptoms of a faulty NOx sensor include an engine warning light on the dashboard, reduced engine performance and nitrogen oxide odours in the exhaust.

It is important to replace a faulty NOx sensor as soon as possible to maintain engine performance and reduce harmful emissions.
