The importance of the lambda probe…

The lambda sensor

The lambda sensor is an important component of a vehicle’s emission control system. It is designed to measure the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust gases and provide information to the engine control unit (ECU) to adjust the air/fuel mixture.

The main role of the lambda sensor is to measure the amount of residual oxygen in the exhaust gases after they have passed through the catalytic converter. The sensor detects the amount of oxygen by comparing the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases with the amount of oxygen in the ambient air. It then sends electrical signals to the ECU, which adjusts the amount of fuel injected into the engine to ensure complete and efficient combustion.

How does it work?

Modern lambda sensors are broadband sensors that can accurately measure the amount of oxygen in exhaust gases over a range of values. These sensors are also equipped with an internal heating to quickly reach their operating temperature and produce accurate signals as soon as the engine is running.

Common symptoms of a faulty lambda sensor include an engine warning light on the dashboard, engine misfiring and petrol smells in the exhaust.

Il est important de remplacer une sonde lambda défectueuse dès que possible pour maintenir les performances du moteur et réduire les émissions nocives.
