DPF cleaning methods

All DPF / FAP / KAT cleaning methods

The effective filter cleaning method must remove soot, ash, scale and cerium oxide particles from the filter channels (inlet and outlet) and also ensure safety for the filter core cartridge itself.

1. Hydrodynamic cleaning

The cleaning method uses a special machine that injects liquid directly into the filter. It is necessary to apply the cleaning product – detergent.

Advantages : safe for the filter’s catalytic coating. High efficiency, even up to 98% of the flow rate.
Unlike others, it effectively removes all particles from the filter channels: soot, ash, scale and cerium oxide.
No need to cut out the ceramic cartridge.
Fast cleaning time: around 30 min.

Disadvantages : efficiency depends on the right choice of detergent.

2. Cleaning by heat treatment

Burning the soot in the induction furnace. Putting the ceramic cartridge of the filter core in the oven for about 12 hours.

Advantages : effectively removes (burns off) soot.

Disadvantages : Does not remove other particles, such as ash, which cannot be burnt.
Significant risk of damage to the ceramic filter cartridge, which is sensitive to sudden changes in temperature.
Need to cut the filter, remove the cartridge and then re-solder.

3. Ultrasonic cleaning

The method consists of fully immersing the filter in the bath with the solution. The ultrasound in the washing solution generates pressure waves in the form of exploding bubbles, which detach the pollution from the surface of the washed filters.

Advantages : Allows that the filter channels are properly cleaned as soon as the water reaches all the points.
No need to cut the filter.

Disadvantages : In very blocked (sintered) filter channels, ultrasonic water has limited access and penetration, leaving these areas clogged. Need to blow with compressed air.

4. Cleaning by pneumatic treatment

The particulate filter is mounted on the special machine where it is blown out using compressed air.

Advantages : Each filter channel is individually oriented during blowing.
Relatively non-invasive for the filter cartridge.
Cleaning without the use of detergents.

Disadvantages : Need to cut the filter, remove the cartridge and re-solder.
Low efficiency of filter cartridge if filled with oil.
General efficiency: around 70%.

5. Cleaning by forced regeneration

Using the diagnostic computer, the mode in which the engine runs at high revs is started.
The fuel mixture is enriched and has an influence on the increase in exhaust gas temperature up to 600 ˚C! Soot burning is possible under these conditions.

Advantages : effectively burns soot in vehicles with low mileage up to 50,000 km.
Procedure without dismantling the filter.

Disadvantages : Does not remove ashes. Burns soot only.
Not very effective for high-mileage vehicles, where ashes clog the filter to the prevailing level.
Regeneration service mode overloads the engine considerably (engine “massacre”).
We recommend changing the oil after regeneration.

6. Chemical cleaning

This operation involves introducing chemicals into the filter to dissolve the soot. The carbon deposits are chemically cleaned with one product and then rinsed with another. The technician then connects the computer to the vehicle and starts the filter regeneration service procedure.

Advantages : No need to cut the filter. Chemicals can be applied without dismantling the filter.

Disadvantages : rinses only the smallest particles from the inlet channels of the filter cartridge.
It effectively cleans only the filter outlet channels, leaving dissolved deposits in the filter inlet channels (blocked on the outlet side).
Very invasive method for the filter cartridge.

7. Cleaning by pressurised water machine

The operator places the particle filter in a washing cabin and fixes it to a support. A pressurised water sprayer is placed at the filter inlet, while a ‘polluted’ water collector is placed at the filter outlet. The machine pulses pressurised water to remove the soot and ash clogging the cartridge cells.

Advantages : Satisfactory cleaning, environmentally friendly alternative.

Disadvantages : Particulate filter needs to be removed and replaced, machine is expensive and bulky, filtration needs to be changed regularly, filter needs to be dried after cleaning.
